I found myself more drawn to Sean Scully's work after I saw his series of door photographs. Although the large paintings beside the photographs (at the VMFA a few months ago) were abstract, having the possible door reference suggested was helpful and made me look at his paintings afresh - not to see "doors", but simply to see them.

I found Ray Kass's talk at the Reynolds Gallery helpful in providing some insight into his work process and sources of inspiration. Ray Kass's work is very appealing to me in the way the materials are allowed to make organic forms.

I use different styles of writing to contrast the marks and texture they make, and to reference teh history of writing. The words carry meaning, but the meaning is secondary to line and textrue.

Babble

Incorporating more writing, and exploring the texture of repetitive script, the work became less figurative.

Truffle Wood

Working slightly bigger and on more durable materials, I explored the foil's ability to convey the texture of bark and shine of leaves.

  In this small study of tree reflections, I can the beginnings of my exploration of writing as marks.
